easy quick WV post

You know you're in West Virginia when:

The local pop station plays "Jungle Love" by Morris Day and the Time after "Summer Love" by Justin Timberlake.

When you signal to make a left turn, the car immediately behind you will put his signal on as well (and probably the person behind him will do so, too), so that any other cars behind *them* know they shouldn't try to pass.

The speed limit on the interstate is 70, but you can barely do 55 on some of the climbs through the mountains.

At the end of many driveways, there is a large wooden box frame on stilts, which are often concreted into the ground. The box is often covered in chicken wire or other reinforcement, but sometimes is simply made of plywood. The boxes have lids which are fastened shut tightly, either by padlock or other mechanism. Three guesses what the purpose of the box is.

You have to drive an hour for decent wireless, and by "decent" I only mean "a little bit faster than dial-up."

Cell phone signal = joke.

You are in the midst of the most beautiful state parks in the East, even though you cannot pronounce their names--and nor can the locals when you ask them to parse for you. (Monongahela!)

You realize there is no better place to hike with children. Lots of boulders for them to scramble on, lots of rivers to dip their feet in, lots of mushrooms and creatures to discover, but light on the midday high-elevation storms.

The depth of the quiet, the thickness of stars: nighttime is enchanting, exhilarating.

You must ask the cashier at the grocery store to repeat herself three times when she inquires, "Are these gripes seedless?"

If you thought I was kidding, I wasn't. The fourth this year was nothing short of, uh, fascinating. We had homemade pyrotechnics, homemade rocket launchers (my dad christened it "La Bomba"), homemade vodka slushies. Lots of fun. A trip to the zoo, a chance to waterski, wheelies on the fourwheeler, and many many many snappers.

The pic of my cousin Dana, above, links to a slideshow--mostly of family pics.

And re my earlier post, in which I claim that "Pregnant Cat" is an actual title for a rocket: I was wrong. Apparently, the Pregnant Cat was affectionately named by my aunt Linda after the way it appears to have many nipples, like a pregnant cat would. It has nothing to do with the wheezing whine it emits once it's lit (which is why I thought they called it Pregnant Cat). But that's not its real name, anyway. And no, I don't know its real name. But regardless, it SOUNDS like a pregnant cat; or, more precisely, a cat in labor.

Good times.

some pics from dance

:)

If you watch the slideshow, I tried to get Hannah at the apex of her Russian. My camera is so old and crappy, and my timing even worse, that I have to simply offer what will appear to be a cartoonish sequence of attempts.

And Josh, of course, with his screwdriver.

free haircuts

Spring buzzes for the boys via their excellent father, who also spent the day letting Josh drive the riding lawn mower around the yard. :)

madeline's way back machine

A pic from the father daughter exactly one year ago. I just thought it would be fun. :) Don't look at our ugly kitchen.

for the family :)

This is for you, mom. Pics from the elementary school's annual "Royal Ball," AKA the father-daughter dance.

We had fun thrift store hopping to find dresses last week, but it was slim pickins for shoes.

double-duty: flickr work, mom's work

Double-duty post, here. One of the reasons I moved over to MT was so that I could better post, manage, and etc pics. I could have used flickr with TP, granted, but things just never seemed as EASY as they were supposed to be over there.

So, here's a first post from over at flickr.

I should have posted this long ago: this is the SHIRT that my mom MADE me for my birthday. I know bunch of you out there are avid knitters, so I thought you would be interested. This is silk that she spun, dyed, and knitted all with her very own hands. My mom, she's handy for sure. A little hard on the blog, but she makes cool stuff. (Just kidding Mom!!)

The shirt is beautiful--this photo doesn't do it much justice. I will have to wait until it warms up a little before I can wear it here in the frozen north. :)

new digs

wv112004.jpg

We're moving! This has always been a theme in my life: moving. After a good start at Typepad and a semester using Moveable Type at school, I'm cutting the TP apron strings and going out on my own with MT.

The pic also is thematically linked: Here we are standing in front of an overheated Montero (overheated from getting stuck, and then spinning spinning spinning in the mud), in front of the new WV homestead, where we will one day build and retire. One day.

The peop in the pic: me (in my nerd goggles), Joshua, Hannah, Jackson, and Charlotte. Taken Thanksgiving weekend, 2004.
